How the baby name picker works

Naming a person is a big decision, and staring at a list of thirty favorites rarely makes it easier. This picker shows you two names at a time and asks one simple question: which one? Your instinct answers faster than any spreadsheet, and after a few rounds the name that kept winning is the one left on screen.

The list below is loaded with popular names to get you started. Delete the ones you would never use, paste in your own shortlist, and press Go when you are ready.

  1. Add your options. Type them one at a time, or paste a whole list in at once.
  2. Press Go. You will see two options side by side.
  3. Choose the one you prefer. The other one drops out of the running.
  4. Keep going until only your winner is left.

Tips for better results

  • Run the list once each, then compare the two winners. Disagreements show up quickly.
  • Say each matchup out loud with your surname attached. Some names only sound wrong in full.
  • Set Final Choices to 3 if you would rather leave with a shortlist than a single name.

Common questions

How many names should I add?

Anything from four to forty works well. More names means more rounds, so if your list is huge, delete the obvious no-gos first and let the picker handle the genuinely difficult calls.

Can both parents use it together?

Yes, and it is the most useful way to run it. Take turns choosing, or each run the same list separately and compare your winners afterwards.

Can we come back to our list later?

Yes. Once you press Go you can copy the link to the page and keep it for later, or send it to whoever you are deciding with. The names you add are yours alone and are never collected.
